A different class for 2013
By Marcial Portilla
Despite a record number of applications, this year's freshmen class is smaller than originally expected.
According to Vice President for Enrollment Management Mike Sexton, Santa Clara received a record amount of 10,226 applicants this year. This number is approximately 100 more than last year's 10,124 applicants for the class of 2012.
Despite this increase, only 1,092 freshmen started classes on Monday. These students represent the portion of applicants who committed to attending Santa Clara in response to their acceptance, and was much smaller than expected.
Additionally, there was an 11 percent increase in prospective students filing for financial aid.
"Although it was a challenging enrollment year felt by most colleges in the U.S., we are very excited and proud of our enrollingà new undergraduates." Sexton said.
Of the freshmen class, nearly 650 are from California, Sexton said. Additionally, approximately 21 non-US citizens will be joining the class of 2013, coming from areas of the world as disparate as Africa and Latin America.
"Since the newly accepted freshmen class was actually slightly lower than expected, the admissions office increased the number of transfer enrolling students to around 260," Sexton said.
By the numbers, Sexton stated that the acceptance rate for this freshmen class is 59 percent, and the mean unweighted GPA of the enrolling students is 3.55. The mean SAT critical reading score is approximately 600, and the mean SAT math score is 620.
In comparison to the last freshmen class, the results are almost the same:
the class of 2012 had a mean GPA of 3.53 and mean SAT scores of 600 in critical reading and 627 in math.
