Alexander recovers after wrist surgery

By Kurt Wagner

Freshman point guard Troy Alexander might be out for the remainder of the basketball season after fracturing his wrist Jan. 2 in a game against Harvard, said men's basketball head coach Kerry Keating.

Alexander, who suffered a sprained right shoulder earlier in the season, injured his wrist while trying to cushion a fall on that same shoulder.

The freshman had surgery on Friday morning to insert a pin into the bone.

Paperwork was sent to the West Coast Conference in an attempt to allow Alexander to redshirt this season, reported the Santa Clara Athletic Department. The result of the appeal has not yet been given.

The team is hopeful that Alexander will be granted either a hardship or a medical redshirt, but he may have already appeared in too many games for the redshirt to be granted.

If neither scenario works, Alexander's return to the team could still be a possibility.

"If we can't get the year back, maybe we'll try to get him back in Vegas (for the WCC tournament)," said Keating. "We're going to try and get his year back for him though."

Alexander appeared in 13 games for the Broncos this season, starting seven of them and averaging 1.5 assists per game from the point guard position.

He set a career-high 8 assists on Dec. 23 against Stanford, also playing a career-high 35 minutes in the game.

Meanwhile, the Broncos will rely on guards Kevin Foster and Perry Petty to run the point.

Foster is averaging 13.1 points per game and set a career-high seven assists Friday night in the Broncos' victory over San Francisco.
