Back and ready to act

Welcome back, Santa Clara. And a special hello to those students who are joining us from impacted universities in the New Orleans area. We hope you find yourself at home here at the "Jesuit university of Silicon Valley."

Hearing that phrase (and remembering how most students find it disagreeable) reminds us that though the year is fresh and we are all of to a new start, many of the same campus controversies continue to plague the student body and faculty. These are issues that have been debated and discussed -- but have yet to see a resolution.

For example, many have noticed the construction of the new student resource center where Kennedy Mall once lay. That center was budgeted to be finished by the start of the term -- students had classes scheduled to take place in the new rooms. Alas, the construction continues while Swig, Dunne and McLaughlin residents are detoured to their residence hall alternate entrances.

And speaking of construction, has anyone encountered the beginning of the new library? Probably not since the latest update has the new structure completed by 2007, meaning ground won't break for at least another year. The university seems to be rarely accurate about construction project time lines, yet these disruptions continue to affect student life and activities, as well as academic resources.

It doesn't seem that we've made any progress in the fight against Bon Appetit's high prices, either. A student bought a small sandwich and soda at the Mission Bakery everyday and watched $6.75 get swiped away from his dining plan. On-campus residents continue to lose money each quarter through required meal plans and ridiculous food prices. This is a battle on-campus residents will be facing until prices are lowered or more personalized food plan options become available.

The link between the university and greek organizations is also pending. Is it worth it to deny sororities and fraternities of valuable campus resources such as sexual assault education and body-image awareness because they are "unaffiliated"? Greek life is thriving as a part of the Santa Clara experience and the university should at least recognize such a popular student activity.

Clearly, we have our work cut out for us. As involved students, it is our responsibility to make the changes we want to see on campus. Now is the time.

Start a club, run for office, write a letter to the editor, attend a Broncos athletic event, go to an AS Senate meeting. Just get involved. Do something. Make Santa Clara a place we can continue to be proud of.
