Baseball takes two of three in series against the Aztecs

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Loyola Marymount 66, Santa Clara 48

The Broncos remained winless in conference road games with a loss to the Lions last Thursday. Junior Kyle Bailey scored 10 points in the three minutes before halftime to give Santa Clara a five-point lead, but LMU made a 41-18 run in the second half to seal the victory.

Pepperdine 93, Santa Clara 90

Junior Doron Perkins' game-tying buzzer-beater was waved off as the Broncos lost last Saturday at the Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu. Perkins finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and three steals to pace the Broncos. Senior guard J.R. Patrick dropped in 19 points while Niesen and Bailey each added 13 points. The Broncos (13-13 overall, 5-6 WCC) return to action Saturday to host Saint Mary's.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Loyola Marymount 58, Santa Clara 53

Freshman Tori Markey scored a career-high 18 points, but the Broncos lost to the Lions last Thursday at Leavey. Senior Jennie Rondel and junior Quinn Thomas had 10 and nine points, respectively, and freshman Ashley Gonnerman grabbed nine rebounds for Santa Clara.

Pepperdine 73, Santa Clara 53

The Broncos lost their second straight to drop to 7-16 overall and 3-7 in the WCC. Rondel and senior Whitney Sutak had 17 and 15 points, respectively, to pace Santa Clara. Rondel and Thomas each had eight rebounds. Santa Clara returns home to host San Diego on Thursday night before traveling to Saint Mary's on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Santa Clara 6, San Diego State 2

Chad Fillinger threw six innings and struck out nine to pick up the victory against the Aztecs last Friday. Will Thompson hit a solo home run while Matt McColgan and Michael Lange both went 3-for-4.

Santa Clara 7, San Diego State 5

The Broncos rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Aztecs in game two. Seven Bronco batters had multi-hit games, led by Will Thompson's 4-for-5 performance. Santa Clara had 18 total hits in the game. Thomas Van Buskirk, John Redmond and Kellan McConnell combined for three scoreless innings of relief pitching to preserve the victory.

San Diego State 4, Santa Clara 1

The Broncos concluded the three-game series with a Sunday afternoon loss. The teams combined for only eight base hits as the Aztecs' Chris Hartshorn threw a complete game. The Broncos (5-3 overall) will compete in the River City Classic this weekend in Sacramento.

SOFTBALL

Pacific 2, Santa Clara 0

The Broncos opened up play in the Stanford Invitational with a loss to Pacific last Friday in Palo Alto. Jaime Forman-Lau picked up the loss for Santa Clara.

Stanford 5, Santa Clara 0

The Broncos lost to the hosting Stanford Cardinal. Liz Courter took the loss in the game for the Broncos, whose record fell to 2-10 overall.

Santa Clara 4, Missouri 3

The Broncos scored two runs in the first inning as junior Kelley Johnson connected for a two-run base hit. The teams were tied 2-2 going into extra innings and both teams scored one run in the eighth. Sophomore infielder Shannon Linerud drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning. Forman-Lau went the distance for the win.

Santa Clara 2, Pacific 0

After five innings of scoreless ball, the Broncos got two runs in the bottom of the sixth on freshman Angela Kabanuck's two-run double. Forman-Lau pitched her second complete game of the day to earn the victory for Santa Clara, whose record improved to 4-10 overall.

Stanford 4, Santa Clara 1

The Broncos (4-11 overall) concluded play in the Stanford Invitational with their second loss to the Cardinal. Sophomore Jessica Clee went 3-for-3 with one RBI. Forman-Lau picked up the loss, allowing just six hits. The team will return to action March 3 to play San Jose State.

MEN'S TENNIS

Fresno State 4, Santa Clara 3

Fresno State won the doubles point, but the teams split the six singles matches. Senior Gernot Fischer won his match 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to earn a victory at the No. 1 singles position. Senior Erich Chen and freshman Kevin McQuaid won in straight sets for the Broncos at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively.

Santa Clara 4, Cal Poly 2

The Broncos defeated the Mustangs last Monday to improve their season record to 3-5 overall. Fischer won his number one singles match in three sets by a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Junior Taylor Bedilion highlighted the victory with his 6-1, 6-2 blowout victory at the No. 2 singles position.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Bay Area Classic

The Broncos finished in ninth place out of 14 teams earlier this week in the Bay Area Classic in San Jose. Meggie Fagundes' second-round 81 gave her a tie for 23rd place for the tournament. Courtney Dimpel-Composti finished 36th and teammates Samantha Trask and Candice Palmer tied for 37th. The Broncos return to action March 8-9 to compete in the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Santa Clara 6, UC Riverside 1

After sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, the Broncos won five of the six singles matches to earn the victory last Saturday. All five of the Santa Clara singles victories were straight-set wins, led by sophomore Casey Knutson's 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 singles position. The team returns to the courts this weekend to play Wyoming and Portland in Portland, Ore.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO

Santa Clara 13, Sonoma State 4

The Broncos began the Slugfest Invitational with a victory against the Seawolves. Sophomore Kathleen Hamm led the Broncos with three goals, while junior Catherine Flynn added two goals, two assists, two steals and two kick outs. Freshman Katie Radvanyi and sophomore Alanna Simpkins each had two goals, while freshman Kristin Barnes recorded nine blocks in goal.

Santa Clara 8, CS San Bernardino 6

Radvanyi picked up the hat trick and Flynn added two goals of her own as the Broncos beat the Coyotes last Saturday. Anne Ginotti recorded 16 saves and one steal in goal to anchor the Bronco defense. With the victory, the team improved their record to 5-4 overall on the season.

CS Bakersfield 10, Santa Clara 7

Flynn and junior Katy Shumm scored two goals apiece, but the Broncos fell short last Sunday. Radvanyi, sophomore Bryn Asher and freshman Danielle Mansfield each scored a goal as well. Radvanyi had four steals and Ginotti made seven blocks in goal to lead the defense.

Santa Clara 13, Occidental 8

Radvanyi netted five goals to give the Broncos the victory last Sunday at the Slugfest Invitational. Simpkins and Hamm each added three goals. Barnes and Ginotti split time between the pipes and recorded three saves each as the Broncos improved their overall record to 6-5 on the season. The team will return to action to compete in the UC Davis Tournament next weekend in Davis.
