Baseball team's hopes of winning WCC crushed

University of Portland 7, Santa Clara 6
The University of Portland baseball team played the spoiler Friday at Pilot Stadium, ending Santa Clara's hopes of winning a division title. Pilot starter Sean Sargent went eight-and-one-third innings, limiting the Broncos to five runs on 10 hits, earning his fourth win of the season. Joe Jones earned his first save of the season for Portland. Junior Bronco Kellen McConnell (5-7) was charged with the loss. The Pilots scored six of their runs in the bottom of the second inning. From that point, the Broncos only allowed five hits and tried to chip away at Portland's lead. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Jason Matteucci scored junior Ryan Chiarelli which was followed by one RBI double from junior Will Thompson that scored freshman Robert Perry.
Santa Clara 17, University of Portland 2
Chiarelli led the Broncos in their biggest margin of victory this season, going 5-for-6 at the plate on Saturday. Chiarelli also scored three times and had three RBI. Three other Broncos also accumulated three RBI during the game. Will Thompson went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Designated hitter freshman Nathan Faulkner went 2-for-5 with one run scored and sophomore Dustin Realini hit his fourth home run on the season. Senior Chad Fillinger (5-9) earned the win for the Broncos, pitching six full innings while allowing only four hits and two runs, while striking out six. Freshmen Bryan Fleming and Scott Lonergan, as well as sophomore Andrew Slorp each pitched one full inning, and between them allowed just one hit. Portland starting pitcher Given Kutz fell to 2-5 on the season, taking the loss.
Santa Clara 10, University of Portland 2
Santa Clara blew out Portland in their season finale at Pilot Stadium on Sunday. Senior John Redmond (7-2) earned the win for the Broncos, who finished with their season 27-29 overall, 16-14 in conference. The Broncos concluded their season second in the West Division, two games ahead of University of San Francisco. Overall, they finished fifth in the league. Portland fell to 12-44 overall, and 6-24 in WCC play, finishing fourth in the West Division. Sophomore David Hoffmire and Realini combined for four hits and four RBI to lead the Bronco offense. Nic Crosta also had two RBI on the game.
MEN'S SOCCER
San Jose Earthquakes 3, Santa Clara 1
The Santa Clara men's soccer team ended their spring season May 20 with a loss to the defending Major League Soccer champion San Jose Earthquakes in an exhibition match at the Santa Clara Youth Soccer Park. Junior Kelechi Igwe scored a first-half goal to give the Bronco's an early lead. Several Santa Clara alumni played in the match for the Earthquakes including rookie Steve Cronin and team captain for the game, Ryan Cochrane. The Broncos will open their 2004 season Sept. 2 against UC Davis to start the USF/Diadora Classic at the University of San Francisco. Their home opener is scheduled for Sept. 16 against San Jose State in the annual Adidas Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Santa Clara 1, Stanford 1
The women's soccer team concluded their spring season Wednesday night in Palo Alto with a draw against Stanford University. Freshman defender Bonnie Bowman scored in the first half, giving the Broncos an early lead.Ã The Broncos will open their fall season with seven games on the road, with Cal Poly first on Aug. 27. The Broncos will be led by experienced returning seniors including All-American 2003 WCC Player of the Year Leslie Osborne, All-WCC forwards Megan Kakadelas and Bree Horvath, defenders Jessica Ballweg, Lana Bowen and Monika Sola, and goalkeeper Alyssa Sobolik.
