Broken Lizard to improv on Saturday
By Alyssa Tomasello
Activities Programming Board presents The Broken Lizard Comedy Show featuring the casts of the hilarious "Super Troopers" and "BeerFest."
On Saturday, April 10, stars of the outrageous comedies are set to perform in the Leavey Center.
APB, the on-campus group whose slogan is, "We major in events," is hoping this event to be a major success. APB also put on the fall concert this year featuring Kid Cudi.
The Activities Programming Board has been working since the fall to prepare for this upcoming event. The Broken Lizard Comedy Show was chosen from a pool of candidates.
Other options available to perform included: Tucker Max, the author of "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell," which was recently made into a major motion picture, as well as other Saturday Night Live personalities.
"We decided to go with Broken Lizard for a variety of reasons," Human Resources Director of APB Lindsay Gray said. "It was a combination of availability, recognition, popularity and price. As a team, we decided that Broken Lizard would be the best option."
Broken Lizard seems as though it is the best bet for Santa Clara. Tucker Max was thought of to be a risk, as he can be overly inappropriate at times and was not able to offer a concrete price.
Furthermore, APB chose to go with Broken Lizard for the simple fact that the performers are from movies that are extremely popular among college age students.
When asked what will set this show apart from the previous years, senior Brady Costello, director of finance for APB, said, "(Broken Lizard) is not just an individual comedian performing. Rather, it is a group of funny guys. Unlike last year's comedian, (The Office's) B.J. Novak, this is not a set performance. B.J. came in with a plan -- while Broken Lizard is an improv act, in which they feed off of each other's humor."
APB believes this style of show will enhance the experience because it requires audience involvement.
Because audience interaction is so important to the success of Broken Lizard, it was a determining factor as to inviting them to Santa Clara.
"We are really excited to have Broken Lizard," Gray said. "I think that they have really funny improv acts that involve the audience. It is really cool to be seeing the stars interact with the students and community. I can't wait to see what they come up with."
Open to both Santa Clara students and the public, tickets are on sale now in Benson and online at ticketmaster.com.
Santa Clara student ticket prices are $10 for the floor and $7 for the balcony. Similar to previous years, the public ticket prices are slightly higher at $20 for the floor and $14 for the balcony.
With the admittance of the public, it is highly encouraged to purchase tickets early, as there is limited space available. Nonaffiliated were permitted to attend on the basis that they will increase revenue.
"The fall concert is not open to the public, mainly because that event is subsidized by Welcome Weekend," said Costello.
"We open the comedy show up to the public in order to increase revenue. The more we make off of this event -- the better the performer will be for the spring concert."
APB is encouraging students to purchase tickets in order to ensure the best possible performance."The APB team has been working very hard to bring an exciting and hilarious comedy show to Santa Clara this year," said APB member Jenny James. "The Broken Lizard Comedy Show is going to be a must see event for all. Everyone should buy their tickets. Meow."
After last year's comedian, BJ Novak, was a huge hit with the Santa Clara population, some student's are looking forward to this year's performace with high expectations, even first-year students.
"In order to describe my expectations for this show, I must quote Officer Farva, it will be 'delicious,'" said freshman Giovanni Gianotta.
