MEN'S BASKETBALL
USD 75, Santa Clara 69
Santa Clara lost its second straight conference game to the Toreros at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. The Broncos were up seven points at the half, 34-27, when San Diego's Ross DeRogatis nailed three three-point field goals in the first six minutes of the second half on a 21-4 run. Santa Clara pulled within three with about three minutes left in the game until senior Torero forward Nick Lewis helped his team close it out against the Broncos with a three and a follow-up dunk. Junior center Sean Denison led Santa Clara with 14 points and five rebounds. The Broncos committed 25 fouls on the night, including two technicals.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
USD 85, Santa Clara 70
Despite a first half in which the Broncos went on a 15-0 run with about eight minutes left in the half, the Toreros came back in a big way during the second half, scoring off turnovers and holding Santa Clara to only 23 points. The Broncos only shot 30 percent from the floor during the half and were out-rebounded by a ratio of about 2-to-1. Sophomore guard Chandice Cronk had 18 points while junior guard Anna Martin had a career-high seven rebounds for the Broncos.
MEN'S TENNIS
Santa Clara 4, UCSC 3
In their first match of the spring season, the men's tennis team won the home opener at the Degheri Tennis Center. In doubles action, the No. 2-seeded team of sophomores Kevin McQuaid and Blaine Shields won 8-4 against Max Ortiz and Ilya Gendelman. The top-seeded match was won 8-4 by Banana Slugs Matt Seeberger and Shane Templeman who defeated juniors Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen. Freshman Brian Brogan and sophomore A.J. Kerin sealed the doubles competition with a win over Julian Sunn and Alexander Villalobos, 8-4. In singles action, freshmen Tommy Hicks and Brogan both won their matches while only dropping 11 games total. Shields clinched the victory for the Broncos with a win over Colin Mark-Griffin 6-2, 6-1.
Santa Clara 5, UC Davis 0
The Broncos soundly defeated the Aggies in the afternoon doubleheader. No. 1 seed Macek beat Michael Chin 6-1, 6-0 and No. 3 Rasmussen defeated Henri Landes 6-3, 6-1. The No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams both won. The Broncos are now 2-0 on the season under fourth-year head coach George Husack.
