Bronco Briefs: Women's water polo splits weekend set

Women's Water Polo
SCU 13, CS Hayward 2
Senior utility Kelley Mays and freshman driver Kathleen Hamm scored three goals apiece to lead the Broncos, while senior utilities Becky Hong and Elizabeth Glotzbach each added two. Junior Goaltenders Anne Ginotti and Alexandra Dalmau split time, combining for seven blocks.
CS Northridge 6, SCU 3
The defensive battle ended in a three-goal loss, as Santa Clara split Saturday's matches. Freshman driver Alanna Simpkins and sophomore driver Amanda Ginn scored for the Broncos.
SCU 12, UC-Davis 8
Mays, Glotzbach and sophomore driver Katy Shumm each netted three goals to lead the Broncos to Sunday's win in Slugfest Tourney action. Hong, Simpkins and Hamm all scored one apiece to round out the scoring.
CS Bakersfield 11, SCU 8
Shumm scored four goals, including a game-tying goal with 30 seconds left in regulation to send the match into overtime. Bakersfield rallied in the extra frame to secure the win, which dropped the Broncos to 4-3 on the season and closed out their play in the Slugfest Tournament. The Broncos face UC-Davis again this Friday before participating in the UC-Davis Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
Baseball
San Diego St. 5, SCU 4
The Broncos dropped the first game of last weekend's three-game series against the Aztecs by one run, as the Broncos could only muster one run in the ninth inning. Senior pitcher Matt Travis threw 6 1/3 innings, while allowing two earned runs and striking out five. Designated hitter sophomore Scott Shapiro went 2-for-4 with one RBI and sophomore pitcher Anthony Rea took the loss after giving up one run and two hits in the relief appearance.
SCU 9, San Diego St. 6
The Broncos scored seven runs in the first five innings, led by senior shortstop A.J. LaBarbera's two-run home run in the fourth, evening the series against the Aztecs. LaBarbera went 2-for-3 on the afternoon, with four RBIs and two runs scored. San Diego St. responded in the fourth by scoring four, but could only plate two more during the rest of the game. Closer freshman Patrick Overholt came in on relief, pitching a perfect ninth to record his second save of the season.
San Diego St. 9, SCU 3
The Broncos closed out their series this past Sunday with a 9-3 loss at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Broncos scored three runs in the first three innings, but Aztecs starter Ben Coon settled down from then on, pitching seven full innings in the win. Junior pitcher John Redmond recorded the loss, dropping his overall mark to 1-2, and the Broncos drop to 6-6 as a team. Upcoming for Santa Clara is a road trip against UC-Santa Barbara this weekend.
Women's Basketball
SCU 57, LMU 49
Sophomore guards Kayla Huss and Quinn Thomas led the Broncos with 12 apiece, as the squad picked up the road win. Senior forwards Tammy Annas and Julie Butler also finished in double figures, registering 11 and 10, respectively. The women did not allow LMU to hit a three-pointer, and they were flawless from the free throw line, going a perfect 9-9.
Pepperdine 66, SCU 64
A last-second shot gave the Waves the win, and West Coast Conference bragging rights for the time being this past Saturday. Julie Butler paced the Broncos with 14, while fellow seniors Annas and forward Kendra Rhea chipped in 11. Santa Clara returns to the Leavey Center Feb. 20 for a date with San Francisco.
Softball
SCU 1, Pacific 0
Pacific 5, SCU 1
Senior first baseman Tracie Hall's seventh-inning home run broke a scoreless tie and gave the Broncos the shutout win in game one of the doubleheader. Junior pitcher Jaime Forman-Lau threw a complete game, while allowing just three hits and striking out five. Lau improved her record to 6-3 on the season, and earned her second straight Pitcher of the Week honor from the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
Santa Clara registered just two hits in the second game, while sophomore Jennifer Ponzo picked up the loss.
Humboldt St. 2, SCU 1
SCU 5, Humboldt St. 1
After losing game one in the 15th inning, the Broncos turned things around in the nightcap behind sophomore infielder Vanessa Werner's three hits and freshman Liz Courter's seven innings of one-run pitching. Santa Clara was scheduled to play at home on Wednesday against UC-Davis, but had to reschedule due to weather conditions. Santa Clara is 7-8 on the season.
Men's Tennis
SCU 4, Sacramento St. 2
The Broncos extended their home winning streak to 13 Saturday with the win over the Hornets. Sophomore Ben Hidalgo clinched the match with his 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Taylor Bedilion, Junior Erich Chen and sophomore Francisco Zepponi were also victorious in singles action.
UC-Santa Barbara 5, SCU 2
Bedilion and redshirt junior Rick Ruso avoided the sweep this past Sunday with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. The winning streak at home came to an end as Santa Clara dropped to 4-4 overall. The Broncos next travel to Boise, Idaho to take on Boise St. and New Mexico this Friday and Saturday.
Women's Tennis
Sacramento St. 7, SCU 0
The women's team experienced different results than did the men this past Saturday, as they were swept by the 75th-ranked Hornets of Sacramento St. Santa Clara next travels to Honolulu, where they will play dual matches against BYU-Hawaii, San Diego St. and Hawaii. West Coast Conference action does not resume for the Broncos until March 1 against Saint Mary's.
Men's Basketball
LMU 73, SCU 61
Santa Clara lost their seventh game in eight tries overall, and for the second consecutive time to Loyola Marymount on Thursday night at the Leavey Center by a final of 73-61. San Jose native Brandon Worthy scored 19
for the Lions in the game.
The loss marked the first time in 13 years that Santa Clara has been swept by Loyola Marymount. Junior center Jim Howell led the Broncos statistically with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ethan Rohde, freshman guard Brandon Rohe and freshman forward Scott Borchart all reached double figures.
SCU 73, Pepperdine 61
The Broncos curbed their cold streak by defeating the Waves in a game televised on Fox Sports Bay Area. Howell led the team once again, scoring 19 points in only 24 minutes of play.
Sophomore guard Terrance Johnson countered with 21 points, but that was not enough to combat the Broncos 54% field goal shooting as a team. The win pushed Santa Clara to 12-11 overall, and 3-7 in conference. They will play San Francisco and St. Mary's on the road this weekend.
