Non-affiliate brandishes paper cutter in library, arrested

A non-affiliate male, described as African American and middle-aged, was arrested after falling asleep and behaving aggressively in the Harrington Learning Commons Monday.

The man, identified as 53-year-old Gregory Maurice Wood of Santa Cruz, reportedly fell asleep while using a computer near the circulation desk. He later moved to the floor, removing his shoes and using his backpack as a pillow, according to Phil Beltran, assistant director of Campus Safety.

"I got up to go get some water and when I came out, he was fully passed out on the floor," said senior Laura Dwyer, who was working at the computer next to him. "He had taken his shoes off."

She said that he was also talking and mumbling to himself before he fell asleep.

The library staff called Campus Safety at approximately 10:52 p.m., eight minutes before the library closes to public.

Campus Safety woke the man and asked him to show identification.

He wouldn't provide it.

"He became argumentative and confrontational," Beltran said. "He ultimately picked up a large cutting board."

Campus Safety called the Santa Clara Police Department who arrived on scene at approximately 11:13 p.m.

"The whole board became a weapon," Beltran said, noting that the board measures approximately 19 inches by 13 inches. "Suffice to say, it would hurt."

SCPD arrested Wood, who was charged with brandishing a weapon.

Igwe hosts Rites of Passage high school students, seeks help

In a joint effort with Igwebuike, the Oriki Theater Rites of Passage program is coming to Santa Clara for a college and leadership seminar on Saturday, Feb. 13.

The Rites of Passage program works with young, high school age African-American males from a variety of backgrounds in the Bay Area to help them learn about their heritage, educate them about basic principles to live by and help them along in the process of growing into young men.

The students will be coming to Santa Clara to tour the campus and listen to various speakers, including Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions A.J. Howell-Williams.

Senior Jordan Bryant describes this as "a great opportunity for Santa Clara students to help the community by sharing their college experiences with local high school students."

Igwe plans to lead the campus tour and eat lunch with the students, sharing advice about the admissions process and college in general.

Igwe is looking for as many other African-American students as possible willing to help with the tour or just come over at noon during lunch to assist in introducing the students to campus life.

Contact Bryant at jwbryant@scu.edu for more information.
