Graduate psychology student dies after surgery complications

Graduate student Lisa Telford died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 7.

She passed away following complications from surgery, said Greg Hauseman on a memorial Web site set up after her death.

The blog, http://www.memoriesoflisa.com, encouraged site visitors to post their memories and thoughts.

"No memory is too small," Hausman said.

University President Michael Engh, S.J., sent out a campus-wide e-mail Tuesday notifying Santa Clara about her death.

Telford graduated from Santa Clara in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. She later returned to Santa Clara in 2007 to complete the Counseling Psychology graduate program.

"The university community extends our thoughts and prayers to Lisa's family and friends," Engh said in the e-mail. "May our gracious God receive her and offer peace and consolidation to all who mourn her passing."

A memorial service will be held this Saturday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Campbell Community Center.

Condolences may also be sent to Telford's mother in Saratoga.

Prop 8 initiative not to be included on 2010 ballet

An initiative to repeal Prop 8 will not be on the ballot in 2010.

Despite an effort to place the initiative on the November ticket, which would restore equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, proponents were not able to gather the 694,354 signatures needed.

As a result, the soonest Prop 8 will be making a reappearance is 2012, the next general election.

"This is a heartbreaking moment," said John Henning, executive director of Love Honor Cherish, the group spearheading the signatures campaign. "Despite the dogged efforts of hundreds of volunteers across California, we did not get the signatures we needed within the 150-day window set by the state."

"Regrettably, Prop 8 will remain a stain on our constitution until at least 2012 and perhaps later," Henning said.

Bon Appétit to protest at Palo Alto headquarters

Bon Appétit workers and students will be protesting the company's management tomorrow at the Bon Appétite headquarters in Palo Alto.

The group says that the company's management has been inactive in responding to worker's grievances of harassment, intimidation and overwork.

Workers and students will rally on the corner of Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue until 5 p.m.

Santa Clara Community Action Program will be providing transportation in the form of carpools. The carpools are meeting downstairs at 2 p.m. to organize. Anybody interested is encouraged to contact SCCAP's Labor Action Committee.
