Twenty years since Jesuits martyred
Nov. 16 marks the 20-year anniversary since six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her 15-year-old daughter were gunned down by El Salvadoran troops.
JoaquÃn López y López, S.J., Juan Ramón Moreno, S.J., Ignacio MartÃn-Baró, S.J., Amando Lópex, S.J., Ignacio EllacurÃa, S.J., Segundo Montes, S.J., Celina Ramos and Elba Ramos were all killed in the massacre at the Jesuit-run University of Central America in San Salvador in 1989. They were killed because of their opposition to the country's civil war.
Santa Clara is especially connected with the assassinations because EllacurÃa visited the campus in June of 1982 to give the commencement address. He was given an honorary degree.
At Santa Clara the martyrs are being remembered during the week-long "Legacy of the Salvadoran Martyrs." Numerous events throughout the week celebrate the lives of martyrs and their lasting legacy on Santa Clara as well as other Jesuit institutions. The events included a prayer service on Monday in Mission Church and a panel presentation on Tuesday in the Williman room.
Additionally, Jon Sobrino, S.J., will lecture tonight as part of the President's Speaker Series about the lessons of martyrs from around the world. Sobrino was teaching at the University of Central America, but away from his residence, when his housemates were murdered.
His lecture is tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Mission Church. Tickets are required for admittance.
