Student jumps from fourth floor balcony

A 19-year-old Santa Clara student jumped from the fourth floor balcony of Domicilio apartments last Wednesday night at around 10 p.m., said Santa Clara police spokesman Lt. Mike Sellers.

The male student sustained only superficial wounds, Sellers said.

"He was not injured, which is amazing to us," Sellers said.

The police report stated the student was under the influence of a "controlled substance."

Police do not know why the student jumped, but Sellers said that "it doesn't appear to be a suicide attempt."

Cryptography presentation to take place today

Today at 5 p.m., math professor Edward Schaefer will give a presentation on the "miracle of public key cryptography" in Kennedy Commons.

"Traditionally, to communicate secretly in code, people have had to agree ahead of time on a secret key that only they would share," Schaefer stated in an e-mail.

"This is no longer necessary and enables secretly sending credit card information online to a Web site."

The talk will explain the new methods of safely encrypting information, discovered by Stanford scholars in 1975.

The only prerequisite for the talk is an interest in mathematics, said Schaefer.
