Spinach off the menu

Popeye would be heartbroken.

Spinach has been removed from the Bon Appetit menu plan in response to FDA warnings about E. coli in bagged and loose fresh spinach.

"We won't be serving it until we know the FDA has determined the source, and determined it's safe to serve spinach," said Lori Flashner, Dining Services general manager.

Spinach has been served at the salad stations of Market Square in years past. Flashner said that as of this week it has been replaced by other options.

Spinach has been linked to 109 E. coli infections in 19 states, and to one death. A California-based company, Natural Selection, is at the center of FDA investigation to trace the contamination source.

Names change for Alamedas North and South

In addition to new types of occupants, Alameda North and South have been renamed.

University President Paul Locatelli S.J. suggested a name change in meetings with Residential Learning Community officials, James Briggs, executive assistant to the president said.

Alameda North has become Saint Clare, after the university's namesake. Alameda South has become Bellarmine Hall. The name is a reference to Bellarmine High School, San Jose, originally housed on campus.

"They are names that reflect a piece of Santa Clara's place in history," Briggs said.
