Campus Safety purchases two Segways
Since testing two types of personal electric vehicles last quarter, Campus Safety has decided to purchase two two-wheeled Segways as environmentally-friendly transportation alternatives to get around campus, said Assistant Director of Campus Safety Phil Beltran.
The new personal transport vehicles will allow Campus Safety officers to reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour and allow for faster travel than previous methods, Campus Safety Director Charlie Arolla said in a November article in The Santa Clara.
Segways also allow for accessing small paths inaccessible by golf carts and traveling onto elevators without dismounting the vehicles.
In addition to the Segways, Campus Safety will continue to rely on bicycles, walking and electric carts to navigate the 106-acre campus.
Officers are currently undergoing training on the vehicles, and the Segways will not be put into service until February, said Beltran.
Flu vaccinations available in Cowell Health Center
To combat student sickness during the next few months of flu season, Cowell Student Health Center continues to offer flu vaccines on a walk-in basis.
The stomach flu is the most-seen student ailment at Cowell, stated staff physician Lauren Salaices in an e-mail in October.
It typically takes one to two weeks after receiving the vaccination for immunization to develop. Flu vaccines cost $27.
Students who would like a vaccination can stop in the health center Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays.
