Signs near Safeway indicate store's remodeling project

Students passing by the familiar triangular lot in front of the Safeway parking lot and near Stuft Pizza may have been intrigued to find construction signs recently posted on the chain-link fence that confines the area.

However, nothing new will be built on the lot. The construction signs indicate the interior remodeling of a portion of Safeway, said Chris Whittell, administrator for marketing and business development for San Jose Construction.

Construction changes include remodeling the produce and wine sections to be in line with all other Safeway stores, making the design change, he said. The signs, which bear the construction company's name, are only out on the triangular lot for advertising purposes, making them more visible to passing cars, said Whittell.

The lot, located at 2655 The Alameda, is owned by the Chevron corporation and is the site of efforts to remove thousands of gallons of chemicals that leaked into the ground, according to a previous report by The Santa Clara.

University network outage scheduled for Saturday

Access to the university's wired and wireless networks will be unavailable for up to six hours this Saturday, according to Ron Danielson, vice provost for information services.

Information Services will use the outage to upgrade and reconfigure the network core.

Retrievals from the ARS, the Facilities Building maintenance system and some surveillance cameras will also be unavailable.

This weekend's outage is the first of two service outages necessary during the university data center's move to the new Learning Commons, Technology Center and Library.

The network should be operational by noon on Saturday, but further network delays and changes may occur following the major outage.

"This will be a significant change to the network architecture, and there may be local problems, or a need to bring the network down and then back up again for short periods of time," Danielson said in an e-mail.

Information Services will use the next outage, scheduled over President's Day weekend on Feb. 15-18, to transport the university servers.

Students who notice problems when using the network following the outage should check the IT status page at it.scu.edu or contact the IT service desk at (408) 554-5700.
