Alumna returns to give Ethnic Studies lecture
Santa Clara graduate Anna Sampaio is returning to campus to give a lecture sponsored by the Ethnics Studies department as part of the first annual Ethnic Studies Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series.
Sampaio, who graduated in 1992 as a political science major and ethnic studies minor, is now an associate professor in the department of political science at University of Colorado at Denver.
Her lecture, titled "(Terror)izing Latino Immigrants: U.S Immigration Policy Post 9/11" will discuss how Latinos have increasingly been targeted for deportation based on suspicion of terrorist activities since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York and Washington.
The event is co-sponsored by the Political Science department and the Diversity and Dialogue Council of the Center for Multicultural learning.
The lecture will take place Thursday Feb. 2 at noon at the Crossroads Conference Room, (building 803), on the corner of Franklin and Sherman streets.
Santa Clara police forum Thursday night
Associated Students's Current University Issues Committee is sponsoring a forum with the Santa Clara Police Department Thursday night at 7 p.m., in the Benson Memorial Center parlors.
A representative of SCPD will be there to speak and answer questions.
AS encourages students living off campus to attend the forum.
New Associated Students advisor hired
Former Associate Director of the Center for Student Leadership and Associate Director of Student Activities Raquel Hackley is returning to Santa Clara starting next Monday.
Hackley will become an assistant director in the Center for Student Leadership, CSL Director Jonathan Gray announced in an e-mail sent out Tuesday.
Her primary responsibilities will be advising Associated Students and teaching Emerging Leaders program classes in the spring.
Hackley had previously left Santa Clara in January 2004 to serve as the associate dean for first year students at Holy Names College in Oakland.
