Out-of-state license plates stolen from campus lots

In the past week, at least five out-of-state license plates have been stolen from the Leavey Center, Casa Italiana and C parking lots.

According to Campus Safety Assistant Director Phil Beltran, similar thefts occurred last year.

Beltran suspects the thefts may be related to some kind of "initiation."

"Its troubling," Beltran said. "I don't know what people could do. They should certainly report them and replace the plates as soon as they can."

The thefts have been reported to the Santa Clara Police Department. Beltran also advises people to be aware of suspicious activity in the parking lots.

Race factors in death penalty, study says

An influential study recently published by the Santa Clara Law review finds that race and ethnicity of the victim and location of the crime play critical roles in sentencing.

The authors of the study analyzed all California homicides committed between Jan.à1, 1990, and Dec.à31, 1999, using information provided by the FBI, the California Office of Vital Statistics and other sources.

Law School Dean Donald J. Polden submitted the study to the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice. The commission will meet Sept. 27 and 28 in Sacramento.
