Senate debates medical amnesty

A medical amnesty policy for students that become ill due to excessive alcohol consumption was introduced at an Associated Students Senate meeting this month.

Under the current alcohol policy, students face disciplinary sanctions for any alcohol violations, including those that require medical attention.

Some worry that this policy could result in students not receiving medical attention.

John Wong, a Campisi Community Facilitator argued that irresponsible action deserves some sort of punishment.

"I also think people do try to avoid penalties and not get caught, and in some cases may put people in danger," Wong said. "Ultimately I think it serves as more of a deterrent than a danger."

The EMTs and members of Associated Students voiced support for an amnesty policy.

Alcohol consumption by a minor violates the Student Code of Conduct, and the Office of Student Life is notified when a violation occurs. Students can receive anywhere from a fine to expulsion for a violation.
