College blogs talk candidates

By Maggie Beidelman

In light of the impending presidential election, I decided to educate myself on what college students across the nation are saying about our candidates. Here's what I found:

"Joe Biden: He's an enigma. Why Barack Obama picked someone who has been in office since 1973 as the Vice President on a ticket for 'Change' is beyond me."

-- Conor Scott (University of Maryland College Park), "The College Conservative," collegeconservativeblog.blogspot.com.

"'Palin Misquotes Albright: There's a place in hell reserved for women who don't support other women.' Even though it was misquoted, it rings true to some extent: Sarah Palin is going straight to hell because her policies are so startlingly and disgustingly anti-woman. For her to even feign feminism is more offensive to me than most things in this election."

-- Jessica Roy (New York University), "Jess & Josh Talk About Stuff: (sub)culture for the masses," jessandjoshtalk.blogspot.com.

"Live-Bloggin: Joe Biden's Speech. 8:31 - I know he's gushing about his son, but maybe 'I'm one hell of a success' isn't the line Joe Biden needs. 8:42 - Nice job turning their campaign competition into a positive thing, being able to see how Barack Obama 'touches people.' 8:43 - Uh huh... some 'friend' he is to John McCain: accidentally calling him 'Geor...' then joking it off as a Freudian slip. The 'That's not change. That's more of the same!' line has power. 8:53 - Aaaaand Obama comes on stage, as announced earlier. 8:56 - He seems out of place. Maybe it's the lack of formality in a surprise appearance, or maybe he's struggling with the thinner air up here, but it looks like he's not focused."

-- Largely Unclear (Yale University), "The West at Yale," jakemcguire2.blogspot.com.

"Should Obama come across reasonably decent and knowledgeable in the debates, this fairly close election will turn into a rout. If Obama bombs in the debates, the country will simply vote for McCain because even though they may disagree with his policies, they will at least say he is ready."

-- Anthony Palmer (University of South Carolina), "The 7-10: Palmer on Politics," www.theseventen.com.

"What happened to McCain? Where did he go wrong and why is he losing so badly? McCain is feeding the developing story that he is erratic and unpredictable in his decision-making by proposing gas tax holidays, picking Sarah Palin and suspending his campaign to go mediate a huge political compromise on an issue he knows nothing about."

-- David M. Manes (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), "Political Cartel," politicalcartel.blogspot.com.
