Concert, dance and show celebrate homecoming

By Denise Doerschel

This weekend's homecoming festivities take a different spin on traditional celebrations. At most universities homecomings are centered on football; however Santa Clara's lack thereof calls for alternative ideas.

This year's theme is "StaHnFerd Who?" making it clear that we see no threat in playing Stanford's soccer team on Friday.

Homecoming festivities begins on Friday night with an art festival at the Williman Room in the Benson parlors. From 8:45 p.m. until 11 p.m. attendees may view the artwork of Santa Clara students. There will also be a donation bin at the Art Show, which will be given to the Deora Bodley Book Fund at Saint Clare's School.

"The purpose of this event is to provide a more visible venue for the artwork of Santa Clarans," said senior Pablo Torres, APB Special Events Chair.

In addition to the art, there will be an open mic complete with a band and D.J.

Saturday night brings the peak of the week with the annual Boat Dance. The theme is Bucky's Black and White Ball. Those who wish to attend should dress in a theme black and white outfit or semi-formal attire.

"I'm dressing as a priest," Torres said.

Hopefully those attending will get into the spirit.

As the boat cruises around San Francisco Bay, students can dance the night away. Many students in the past have missed the boat, so leaving early is recommended.

The Homecoming men's soccer game against Stanford will be followed by a free concert at Stanton Field from 8 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. by local band Stunt Monkey.

Though there is no football team at Santa Clara, this week's homecoming activities celebrate community.

"We have to work with what we have," Torres explains, "Ideally, we'd like to bring together various groups of Santa Clarans."

This is exactly what the theme is meant to represent - to show pride in the Santa Clara community and make our pride be known.
