Cutting the costs of music
Within the stress of the quarter system there is little time for self-reflection and creativity. We become our work. There's always a paper here, a midterm there and boatloads of reading in the cracks. At times it can be overwhelming. In the middle of the frigid library, I often feel the need to let out a blood-curdling scream. I refrain, knowing that my energy is better used elsewhere.
The question remains, where should we be using that energy when we are on work overload and our college budget prohibits us from paying for a paintball or bowling excursion? Where should we be going? The answer, my friends, is hidden right here on our very campus.
Beyond the O'Connor grass, adjacent to the Mayer Theatre, lies a building foreign to many of us. Crisp, clean and inviting, the Music and Dance Facility is home to two of the campus' smallest majors; however, it does not breed exclusivity. Rather, students from all majors and interests are invited here to unleash their inner divas.
Beginning this spring, with fall registration, creative expression in the musical sense will become much easier. The University is making it FREE. So, whether your weapon of choice be a clarinet, a guitar, a harp or your voice, there is opportunity for free private instruction courtesy of good old Santa Clara. Most students who register do have experience, but all levels of skill are invited to take advantage of this exciting prospect.
Enrollment is simple. Beginning with the first day of fall registration, simply make your way to the Music and Dance Facility and talk to Irene Freeman in the Music Department office (Room 222). She will put you on the list for private instruction and fill you in with further clerical details. The instruction will register as a class on your schedule and will incur no fees in addition to your quarterly tuition for the first time in the department's 30-year history.
Lessons vary in time and meet once per week for either 30, 45 or 60 minutes. It's well worth the extra hop, skip and a roll over to the building to check out this amazing new opportunity, because clearly, the Music Department office with its exciting new offer, is the place to be.
