Body Image Awareness Week: Ads 'R Us??: How the Media Influences Eating Disorders and Body Image

Come watch the award-winning Jean Kilbourne film, "Killing Us Softly 3: Advertising's Image of Women" on the study of gender representation in advertising. The film reviews over 160 popular ads and commercials and explores the issues of how the media influences gender stereotyping, eating disorders, and body image concerns. Spring Book of the Quarter

"The spirit catches you and you fall down : a Hmong child, her American doctors, and the collision of two cultures," by Anne Fadiman, is the spring book of the quarter. The Multicultural Center (MCC) and Unity RLC will lead the discussion of this thoughtful and provocative story. Although the details of this book are specific to the Hmong people of Laos and this one family's experience with the American medical system, the compelling issue of health care being as much about cultural awareness and sensitivity as it is about prescribing the right medicine is one that we can all relate to.
