Dining Guide: Armadillo Willys
By Andrew Hardenbrook
Unfortunately for barbecue lovers out there, KC Masterpiece's restaurant chain does not make its way to California. However, I would not worry too much with Armadillo Willy's right down the street to fulfill your barbecue cravings.
The dark-wood walls and country atmosphere of the restaurant set the perfect mood for barbecue; the only thing it really lacks is sawdust on the floor. You have to order at the cash register and pick up the food at the counter, which definitely rules it out as a romantic date spot, but it is perfect for a lunchtime stop.
The menu has three basic barbecue categories: Ribs ($11-13), Platters ($9-12) and Sandwiches ($6-7). I went with the Smoked Chicken Breast ($5.99), which comes with your choice of mild or jalapeño barbecue sauce, bread and cole slaw, salad or potato salad. The side dish isn't much, but that does not matter because the sandwich is so good. The meat is really tender and the jalapeño sauce gives it a nice spicy edge - well worth the $6.
Armadillo Willy's also has hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and award-winning chili if you are not in the mood for barbecue. However, if you don't like that smoky barbecue flavor, I would not recommend going to this restaurant.
