Florida woman sustained
Last night, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush ordered a feeding tube to be reinserted into the comatose body of Terri Shciavo. For the past 12 years, the brain-damaged woman has relied on a tube for hydration and nutrition. Without the tube, doctors said she would have died within two weeks. Terri's husband, Michael Shiavo has argued in favor of her death, while her parents insist on keeping her alive.
The debate continues regarding the state of Terri's consciousness. She is bed-ridden in a vegetative state, but her eyes remain open, and her parents argue that she is still an active and alert human being.
Regardless of Terri's state of consciousness, the more important issues are commitment and hope.
Since her hospitalization, Michael has fathered another child with his long-term girlfriend and received millions of dollars from medical malpractice settlement money. It's obvious that Michael has ended his commitment to Terri. Terri's parents, on the other hand, are still hopelessly committed to their daughter, as any good parents would be in a similar situation. All they want is a chance to hope for their daughter, and we think they deserve it, and it's for this reason that we stand behind the governor's decision.
