Fortnight of waiting has begun

By Brian Witter

Some believe that the two weeks in the run-up to the Super Bowl are pretty lackluster when it comes to thrilling moments in sports. Even the two conference championship games played on Sunday had a tough time keeping their viewers' attentions in the second half. However, Super Bowl XL looks to be quite the gridiron grudge match next month as the Seahawks, behind their MVP running back and wicked offensive line, match up with the hungry Steelers, who are looking for their fifth world title. Our staff picks will be showcased next week, so you know who to put your money on. We're all about promoting accuracy at this publication.

Moving on to hoops, monotony has not been a factor in either college or pro basketball lately. Saturday, the three remaining unbeaten college teams all lost which is kind of a downer for those of us who like to see at least one team go the distance rather than succumbing to parity. In the WCC, there is unfortunately no parity with the 6-0 SpoCompton boys leading the charge and LMU at 5-1.

At the bottom sits our beloved Bronco squad who was held to only 45 points by Pepperdine on Monday night. Key injuries and inexperience are taking their toll on the Santa Clara players this season after they made it all the way to the conference semifinals against Saint Mary's only a year ago.

Oh, if only we had Kobe. His 81 points last weekend were nothing short of a man possessed. There have been some WCC games where the total combined score didn't add up to 81.

With the end of the NFL season looming, basketball will help to break up a fortnight of Steelers-Seahawks-Tatupu-Polamalu analysis. On Saturday night, the Broncos host San Francisco followed by a Monday matchup with the San Diego Toreros. Show your support by showing up. There are only three more home games after these two. Seniors, this may be one of your last chances to sit in the Ruff Riders section ever. One last chance to shout suggestive phrases with your peers.

Not to be outdone by the men, five-time conference player of the week Michelle Cozad and the women's basketball team will be up at USF on Thursday night. The ladies won their last two games over the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the conference, putting them back into contention for the WCC crown in third place. There will be much anticipation of the Super Bowl in the days to come, but those days will also be filled with enough action to satiate our hunger.
