Get savvy on the ins and outs of fashion this fall

By Molly Gore

As summer comes to a close, it's time for the perennial reevaluation of the fall wardrobe. Granted, California's two-season cycle does not lend itself to the fall trends that grip the rest of the country, but most can be adapted to a chic, wearable form for the climate.

Trends come in layers. There are those that appear on the runway, the most outrageous, exaggerated and pricey.

Next is the second tier of higher-end designers who adapt the silhouettes of the runway for their own designs, more affordable and wearable.

Thirdly, there are those watered-down versions of runway designs, produced from viscose and rayon, that are much more affordable and still satiate the need for a high-fashion look without the label.

There remain those trends that never appear near the runway, like UGGs, that catch on among young women and other demographics anyway. Following trends is not synonymous with being a "fashion victim," as long as some fads are ignored. If a trend fits into your personal style, or inspires you to try something new and bold, try it! However, it would be wise to exercise a level of discrimination against certain fads. There is no person on whom every look works well. Wear what makes you feel good.

This season, the shapes are bold, modern and tailored. The colors are brighter, spunkier and slightly more adventurous than last Fall. The looks this season are easy to wear, and some universally flattering like the wide-leg trouser pants and shirtdresses. Dress them up, or dress them down. Trade in the leggings for tights, the UGGs for some classic Mary Janes, and the boot-cut jeans for a wide-leg style.
