Giveaways, contests at Bronco Bash Saturday

By Taylor Dalton

The Ruff Riders are kicking off their second-annual, award-winning Bronco Bash this Saturday to celebrate the athletic spirit here at Santa Clara. Recipient of the "Broncos Values" award, which was given at last year's Student Leadership Celebration, this school-sponsored event will be held in the Leavey Center at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, and will be an opportunity for athletes and fellow students to promote their school spirit through athletics.

"The second-annual Bronco Bash is the premier event for the Ruff Riders and is a celebration of Bronco spirit on campus," Michael Zozos, the co-president of the Ruff Riders said. "The Bash will showcase all of SCU's athletic teams and with the theme 'Proud to be a Bronco,' the Ruff Riders look to kick off the men's and women's basketball seasons with style!"

Presented by the Ruff Riders, Associated Students, the Activities Programming Board and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the Bronco Bash will be open to local community members and all Santa Clara students at no charge. The event will feature several activities including funny skits, a three-point shootout with members of the basketball team, the singing of the Santa Clara fight song and cheer and dance performances. There will also be Ruff Rider competitions for prizes -- sumo-suit wrestling, a pie-eating contest and relay races. The Bash will host giveaways for some lucky fans, including a half-court shot for both the full price of that student's winter quarter books and an all-expenses-paid trip to the West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament. Also to be given away are a 27-inch television with six months free cable, an iPod Shuffle, autographed memorabilia, t-shirts, rally towels and more.

In addition to all the thrilling events and giveaways will be the new Bronco Pep Band, which will make its debut at the Bash and play crowd favorites such as "Wipe Out," "Land of 1000 Dances," and the fight song, "Fight for Santa Clara." The band is not something that Santa Clara has seen for many years and is being instituted to help further ignite school spirit around the other events.

Keeping in mind community spirit and promoting the Jesuit standard, the event will take up a voluntary collection and donate all proceeds to the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund.

Last year, the Bronco Bash was host to a roaring crowd of 500 students, and this year it aims to double that. The Bash is a great way to unite both local community members and students in celebrating athletics and the Santa Clara spirit. This Saturday, the Leavey Center will be a spectacle of entertainment, excitement and student fellowship as Broncos showcase their Santa Clara pride.
