Go cheer on your Broncos
By Bruce Martinez
If this column wrote itself this week it would almost certainly toot its own horn for predicting the Patriots winning the Super Bowl. Unfortunately however, I write it and I'm not much for tooting my own horn. I've got other fish to fry this week if you know what I mean.
Tonight's the night, the big hoe-down between our Broncos and the hated Gonzaga Bulldogs. This of course means Leavey will be at least 75 percent full, the Ruff Riders will break out the "Suck my Dickau" chant and the Broncos will have to play out of their collective minds to win.
The first meeting between the teams this season, an 83-80 Bronco loss in Spokane was notable for many reasons. Firstly, Steve Ross played like a reincarnation of Steve Nash and dropped a surreal 39 points. The Broncos played at a level they have yet to reach again during the conference season. They played like their lives and livelihoods were on the line. They played with panache. Their play reached an inspired level way beyond competence or togetherness.
This is what it is going to take to upset the Zag's tonight. So I implore you to forget the Friday midterms and forget "Friends" and get out to Leavey. Get there early and get loud. Let's make our collective hopes and dreams ride on the Broncos for an evening. By giving our loud unconditional support and filling the figurative bandwagon maybe we can help the Broncos over the top and down into the Promise Land.
They can take us there and we can go for the ride but it's not free. The payment required is our two-hour devotion and the reward is a memory that will last a lifetime: storming the court after knocking off the No. 11 team in the country.
