Good Christians, average musicians
By Patricia Ho
Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, this Christian rock foursome, Everyday Sunday, has enjoyed moderate success, with their single "Just a Story" reaching No. 11 on Christian rock radio charts. Everyday Sunday seems geared to climb even higher with this first major record debut on Flicker Records and are currently on tour, playing at the Christian music festival, Festival Con Dios.
Their newest album, "Stand Up," is a consistent effort, built with the prerequisite church youth group-friendly guitars and choruses in the tradition of anonymous pop-y rock that everyone has heard before but can't keep the names of the bands straight. Musical innovation is not Everyday Sunday's forte.
While lacking in originality, the band has abundant enthusiasm and earnestness. Songs are catchy and easy to follow. Musicianship also cannot be faulted and is as well groomed as any other. There is some variation with regard to tone on this 11-track album, ranging from the celebratory "Stand Up" to the aggressive "Wait." Needless to say, however, the message of religious affirmation is always the same.
Though some flaws may be overlooked, what may be the final nail in the coffin for some is the religious stance the group takes, expressed in specific terms as opposed to general ones. The line is pretty thickly drawn and if you agree with them, that's great, but if not, then too bad. The band is Christian before it is rock, and the rock part by itself does not sustain Everyday Sunday. "Stand Up" for those in the latter category may just be more of the same that's been done better elsewhere. B-
