Head Coach Polly Schulze named WCC Coach of the Year

WOMEN'S GOLF

Matador Spring Invitational

The Broncos shot a school-record final round of 299 strokes to win the Matador Spring Invitational last week in Simi Valley. Freshman Samantha Trask and sophomore Candice Palmer fired a 71 and 72, respectively, in the final round to finish in a tie for third place in the individual competition.

WCC Championships

Head Coach Polly Schulze was named the conference Coach of the Year as the women's golf team placed third in the West Coast Conference Championships on Tuesday in Madera. Trask, who was named to the All-WCC first team, finished in sixth place to lead the squad. Junior Courtney Dimpel-Composti finished in a tie for eighth place and sophomore Meggie Fagundes finished tied for 10th place to earn WCC honorable mention accolades.

MEN'S GOLF

UCSB Intercollegiate

The Broncos tied for 10th place out of 18 teams in the UCSB Intercollegiate Tournament last week in Lompoc. Junior Jonathan Edwards and freshman Jong Yoon paced Santa Clara with 6-over-par scores that were good enough to tie for 15th place. Senior Justin Ahasic tied for 59th place.

WCC Championships

The Bronco men's golf team finished last out of eight teams in the West Coast Conference Championships this past Tuesday at the Riverbed Golf Club in Madera. Sophomore Michael Nicoletti paced the Broncos, who finished in a tie for 21st place with an 11-over-par 227. Junior Matt Klenz finished one shot behind Nicoletti, ending up in 23rd place.

BASEBALL

San Diego 7, Santa Clara 6

The Broncos fell to 16-17 overall and 5-5 in conference action in a heartbreaking, extra-inning contest last Thursday in San Diego. The Toreros scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extras and then bunted home the winning run in the 10th. Sophomore outfielder Jason Matteucci was 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, while junior outfielder Ryan Chiarelli went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

San Diego 8, Santa Clara 5

San Diego picked up their second-straight victory against the Broncos (16-18 overall, 5-6 WCC) in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Cunningham Baseball Stadium. Junior first baseman Will Thompson was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore David Hoffmire went 2-for-3 with an RBI and senior catcher David Mandley drove in the other Bronco run.

San Diego 12, Santa Clara 1

The Toreros scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open the close ball game and complete the series sweep in game two of last Saturday's doubleheader. Sophomore shortstop Michael Lange drove home the Broncos' only run of the contest, while Chiarelli had another solid performance, going 2-for-3 on the day. Senior John Redmond picked up the loss to drop to 3-2 on the season.

SOFTBALL

Loyola Marymount 5, Santa Clara 3

After trailing early in the ball game by a score of 4-0, the Broncos responded with three runs in the fourth inning to get back in it. Sophomore Shannon Linerud had a two-RBI double and then went on to steal home on a double steal, as senior Rachel Sherman stole second. The Broncos were not able to score any more runs, however, as they dropped the first game of the conference doubleheader last Thursday in Los Angeles.

Loyola Marymount 5, Santa Clara 0

Loyola Marymount's Lisa Abbott belted a grand slam in the fourth inning to increase an early 1-0 Lion lead. The slam ultimately won the second game of the doubleheader for the Lions, dropping Santa Clara's record to 16-22 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Junior Vanessa Werner and sophomore Jessica Clee had the only two base hits for Santa Clara.

Santa Clara 6, Loyola Marymount 4

The Lions and Broncos tangled for their second doubleheader in three days at the LMU softball field in Los Angeles. Freshman Angela Kabanuck singled and later scored to start the Bronco rally in the second inning. Freshman Valerie Mock also recorded an RBI in the second inning. Senior Jaime Forman-Lau pitched an excellent game for Santa Clara, striking out 15 batters and allowing only five hits.

Santa Clara 2, Loyola Marymount 1

The Broncos and Lions needed extra innings to decide the second game of the doubleheader. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore Jenny Brown walked, stole second and scored the game-winning run on a Lion error. The win improved the Broncos' record to 18-22 overall and 4-4 in the WCC.

California 5, Santa Clara 0

The fifth-ranked Golden Bears outhit Santa Clara 8-1 to claim the victory on Tuesday at Marsalli Park. Senior Jaime Forman-Lau went the distance, striking out three batters. The Broncos (18-23 overall) will return to the diamond this Saturday to host conference rival Saint Mary's.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Santa Clara 6, San Jose State 1

Santa Clara convincingly defeated the Spartans last Wednesday, to improve their overall record to 10-8 on the season and gain two points for the Broncos in the Rivalry Series. The Broncos won two out of three doubles matches to win the doubles point and won the top five singles matches. Junior Janalle Kaloi won her No. 1 singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-2 and sophomore Casey Knutson won her No. 3 singles match by a blowout score of 6-1, 6-0.

Sacramento State 6, Santa Clara 1

The Hornets defeated Santa Clara in the non-conference match-up last Saturday in Sacramento. Santa Clara claimed its only point of the contest as freshman Kimberly Daniel won her No. 5 singles match by a score of 7-6, 7-6. The Broncos (10-9 overall) will return to action to host San Francisco on Friday.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO

Santa Clara 8, Cal Poly 1

Junior Catherine Flynn had four goals and two assists to spark the Broncos (17-15 overall) to victory last Saturday in San Luis Obispo. Freshman Kristin Barnes had 12 blocks in goal to anchor the Santa Clara defense. The team will travel to Hayward next Saturday to face off against Cal State Hayward.
