Inside the Herd: Week 9 Fall 2025

(Braden Auerbach for The Santa Clara)

Men’s Soccer — Nov. 15: Santa Clara 5, Pacific 2

On Senior Day at Stevens Stadium, the Broncos outlasted Pacific in an offensive explosion, scoring a season-high five goals, three of which came in a six minute span in the second half.

Goaltender Eddy Marin ’26 saw his first action since his life-altering accident in 2023, coming in to finish the game for the Broncos. The crowd showed their support for the goaltender, whose comeback has been remarkable. He was credited with a save in the win.

Men’s Water Polo — Nov. 14: Santa Clara 9, Pepperdine 15

The 17th ranked Broncos (9-13, 2-4 WCC) fell to eighth-ranked Pepperdine on Senior Day last Friday. It was a tight match throughout, but the Waves ultimately pulled away in the fourth quarter. Charlie Engs ’27 led Santa Clara offensively, tallying 2 goals and 3 assists. Reese Jenican ’26 netted a hat trick as well, but the close 8-10 deficit turned into a more convincing win for the Waves in the fourth quarter.

Fortunately, the Broncos get another shot at the Waves on Friday at Air Force Academy, where they earned the sixth seed in the WCC Championship Tournament.

Men’s Basketball — Nov. 18 Santa Clara 66, Idaho State 55

Men’s basketball is off to a hot start with a 5-0 record. Tuesday’s contest was a back-and-forth game against the Bengals with the Broncos struggling from the field at times, but ending well after a convincing run in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Christian Hammond ’27 led the way with 16 points, adding to his exceptional start of five straight games with double-digit points. He is averaging 16.6 points per game in this early-season run.

A win against Xavier last week has been the highlight so far, but the Broncos will look to build on their recent success with some tests against stronger teams coming soon.

Next Up: Acrisure Invitational in Palm Desert, California.

Women’s Basketball — Nov. 19: Santa Clara 72, San Diego State 47

The Broncos got off to a quick start in San Diego on Wednesday, leaving the first period against the Aztecs on top 17-6. Maia Jones ’26 led the charge, scoring a season-high 25 points en route to a 25 point win for the away squad. The Bronco defense held the opposing Aztecs to an abysmal 1-of-29 from beyond the arc and a field shooting percentage of just 24.3% (24-of-70).

First-year coach Loree Payne has the Broncos buzzing, as the team is 4-2 heading into their Thanksgiving tournament in Hawaii.

Men’s Tennis made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Individual Championships this week, with Luca Bluett ’28 and John Kim ’26 qualifying as one of 32 doubles teams in the field. The duo began action in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday, facing off against a team from the University of Pennsylvania.

Winning the first set 6-3, Bluett and Kim looked to be in control after taking a commanding 4-2 lead in the second set. But, the set ended up heading to a 7-point set tiebreak, with the Quaker tandem emerging victorious and winning the ensuing 10-point match tiebreak—which is substituted in lieu of a traditional third set—at a score of 10-5.
