KSCU remains up-to-date on ever-changing music scene
By Cameron Collins
During homecoming week at Santa Clara (Oct. 13 - 21) we are certainly going to have our share of music.
With a concert Friday night in the Brass Rail and another one outdoors following the homecoming soccer game, there will be much fun to be had. One of the most exciting aspects of the weekend is that the Rap$callionz are playing the Friday show.
The Rap$callionz are an up and coming rap group from right here in San Jose, yet they fit very well with the other bands on the bill, which are primarily rock. These guys are the perfect example of the burgeoning underground rap scene right under all of our noses.
Although the lineup constantly shifts due to the various solo and side-projects of its members, including such infamous acts as the Diabolical League of Super Villains and Illegal Elian, this show will feature three of the four original members: Rapid-Fire Ruben, D-Squared, and Phat and Phunky Phil. And of course Chauncey P.
Farnsworth will be on the wheels of steel. And although they may be a member short, these guys have been all the rage lately, playing groundbreaking shows at the Gaslighter Theatre and the very illustrious and elite Avi's Garage. You definitely shouldn't miss their set for the world.
These boys know how to pump out the rhymes like no others. Whether they are freestyling on the topic of women loving D-Squared, shaking one's booty, or giving props to San Jo, their lyrics never miss a beat and they keep the audience jumping. At a recent show in Campbell, emcees from all over the Bay Area began to clear the dance floor and break to the beats, being egged on by the crowd's cheers and the band's jeers.
This may be one of the last times to see them for quite awhile, as they will be going into the studio to record their sophomore release to follow up the highly acclaimed self-titled release, so I highly recommend that you come check them out. And don't forget the other bands at the show too, they are worth hearing as well.
Listen to Cameron, a.k.a. Grendel, every Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. on Santa Clara's own KSCU Santa Clara 103.3FM, the Underground Sound.
