LaCamp, Seldin AS victors; Chan ticket disqualified

By From staff reports

James LaCamp and Jasper Seldin won the Associated Students presidential and vice presidential elections by a majority Wednesday night, amid 11th-hour allegations of election code violations that disqualified another ticket.

"We thought that people really connected with the issues that are pertinent to the day-to-day lives of our students," Vice-President-elect Jasper Seldin said.

Presidential candidate Amy Chan and vice-presidential candidate Katie Roberts were disqualified after the AS elections committee found both responsible for verbally campaigning in the Benson Memorial Center and using copyrighted materials in their campaign, both violations of AS election code.

LaCamp and Seldin won 55 percent of 507 votes cast. The Chan/Roberts ticket received almost 43 percent.

"It was a good race," Chan said. "The campaign was challenging because we had only one full week to reach out to the student body. Restrictions and rules were important and there for a reason, but they were somewhat limiting with time constraints."

In a debate between the presidential candidates and their running mates Tuesday night in The Bronco, LaCamp and Seldin named rape education and prevention, alcohol policies and club funding as the primary concerns regarding on-campus life. Chan and Roberts expressed their hope to see the use of more fair-trade products on campus. LaCamp said that while fair trade is still important, he and Seldin did not include it in their platform.

Both tickets agreed that AS should improve relations with students living off campus.

In other elections results, Jenny Moody ran uncontested for senate chair, receiving 436 out of 506 votes. Victoria Soto ran uncontested for junior class senator and received 85 percent of the vote.

There were no candidates for senior senator, a position that, along with other vacant senate seats, will be appointed by the senate chair.

Claire Kollerer and David Crowell, both candidates for sophomore class senator, will face a run-off election this Friday.
