Letter to the editor

AS responds to editorial

The April 2 editorial in The Santa Clara argued, "Student leaders should refocus their idea of school spirit to reflect more than just the (colors) worn by our Bronco athletes and fans."

We agree: Being a Bronco and "Keeping it Classy" transcends athletic spirit. Associated Students distributed wristbands carrying the phrase, "showing the respect and integrity demanded of SCU students," and financially and logistically supported the Tunnel of Oppression. We believe boosting school spirit requires a shared vision among students. We do not limit spirit to athletics, but do recognize the unifying spirit built from the joy shared in great wins and the tears shed after hard losses.

In response to TSC's recent survey at www.thesantaclara.com, "How should Santa Clara bolster school spirit?" 55 percent of respondents answered, "Allow tailgating before sporting events," and 14 percent said, "Improve advertising of sporting events."

During Bronco Week, Associated Students publicized the free pizza provided during the men's basketball game versus Gonzaga and before the Portland game. AS appreciates the support of Ruff Riders, Residential Learning Community Association and Activities Programming Board in their co-sponsoring of Bronco Week.

Recently, we have been disappointed that a Bronco Week article written by AS member Meghan Skarzynski was not published, and Winston Yu, former staff reporter, was dismissed due to his new position as AS sophomore senator.

We need to unite as one Santa Clara community by supporting each other, rather than stifling the actions of other student organizations. Our identity as Santa Clara students holds us to a higher standard.

GO BRONCOS!!!
