Letters and Emails

This is just an informal reply to ["GALA denied home in MCC," May 15]. I felt that Matthew Meyerhofer didn't do enough research in writing this article, and that it strongly detailed the viewpoints of GALA [Gay and Lesbian Alliance] but lacked details from the MCC [Multicultural Center]. Having questioned one source, Raquel Hackley, he did not give a chance for the student leaders or the students who are associated with the MCC a chance to express their viewpoints.

Having been part of MCC, I've felt a strong sense of openness by all of the club leaders. We've held many forums with GALA to foster education and dialogue among the two groups. Within our individual MCC clubs, we've promoted discussion on GALA issues to better inform and educate our members.

The fact that the reporter only emphasized GALA's intentions made MCC appear uncompromising and unfair. A lot of members and leaders of MCC spent countless hours discussing this and many of us wanted to bring GALA in. But as Hackley puts it, the clubs have yet to experience the unity on which MCC was founded. There were also other reasons, but none of them had anything to do with prejudice or discriminatory issues. Meyerhofer should have asked the student leaders of MCC for more information because it was far more than just our personal unity.

Although you may think I'm an MCC member, my views are being presented here as like any other Santa Clara student. As a journalist, you're supposed to be objective. I would appreciate if The Santa Clara reissues another article that would represent both sides fairly. With the way the author wrote that article, how do you expect future relations between GALA and MCC to be if the story only instigates animosity?
