Hookah's long-term effects unknown
I enjoyed reading the recent article regarding the hookah craze. But I am concerned about the widespread misperception that hooka has few, if any, health risks.
Students should be aware that, in fact, little is known about the long term health effects. Few studies have been done, as it is a relatively new practice in Western culture. The limited studies that have been done suggest that water pipe smoke contains levels of tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide and heavy metals similar to, and perhaps higher than, cigarettes.
More studies need to be done to determine the actual risk of water-pipe smoking, but students should keep this in mind when participating in this recreational activity.
