Wake up? Grow up!
Upon reading the "Wake Up" article by Nicholas Weiss printed in the May 14 issue, I was thoroughly irritated. Simply put, I fail to see any way to logically justify or rationalize yelling in front of the residence of several hundred people with the sole intention of waking them up.
Weiss attempts to support his adamant approval of yelling "Wake up, Swig" by pointing out that the drunken barks of inconsiderate passerby are hardly as disruptive as lawn mowers and elevator repairs. Yet, I fail to follow this rationalization.
Yes, the noise resulting from lawn mowers and elevator repairs can be disruptive; however, such noise does not exist purely to disturb sleeping individuals. This might be why Campus Safety does not write up lawn mowers.
Weiss also states such "harmless fun" should be allowed because "after all, we're in college." Somehow, I don't see how the fact that "we're in college" acts as a reason to allow any form of harassment toward others.
My apologies to Weiss if I am raining on any parades, but some of us enjoy sleep. Some of us have difficulty getting to sleep and staying asleep and some of us actually have things to do during our waking hours, such as studying and going to class. In no way do I see yelling "Wake up, Swig" as justified or acceptable. Perhaps, instead of yelling at a building full of sleeping students, people should grow up. After all, we're in college.
