MCC MLK clarification
By MCC Executive Board
It has come to the attention of the Multicultural Center that there have been misunderstandings about the direction taken with Igwebuike's cultural show titled MLK Night 2011 – "Reclaiming Our Voice: The Journey of a Road Less Traveled."
The purpose of a cultural show is for a specific cultural club to illuminate their traditions and struggles. There are nine cultural clubs that focus on the ethnicities they represent, and there will be eight more cultural shows throughout the year.
These cultural shows present a wide variety of talent, from cultural dances to skits and art. Planning for these cultural shows takes many months of preparation, hours of practice and serious dedication by those involved. Everyone is invited to attend these shows and support the clubs within the MCC.
The idea behind having so many cultural shows is to exemplify diversity on campus. By giving each club an equal opportunity to present their culture to the rest of the campus, the Multicultural Center attempts to dispel prejudice and exclusionary feelings towards any one ethnic group.
This goes along with the Multicultural Center's mission statement to "educate people about the experiences of people of color in the U.S. and abroad, challenge the SCU community to engage in issues of race and marginalization and empower individuals to develop their own cultural/racial identity in an increasingly globalized society." This mission is and has been at the root of the MCC for the past twenty five years of opperation. We invite the student body of Santa Clara to partake in this mission with us. Club meetings are held every week as follows:
Monday:5:30 p.m.– Chinese Student Association; 6:30 p.m. Igwebuike; Tuesday: 5:30 p.m. – Mecha/El Frente; 6:30 p.m. – Vietnamese Student Association; 7:30 p.m. – Barkada; Wednesday: 6:30 p.m. – Intandesh; 7:30 p.m. – Ka Mana' O Hawaii; Thursday: 5:30 p.m. – Asian Pacific Islander Student Union; 6:30 p.m. – Japanese Student Association
The Multicultural Center is also open from 9 a.m.- 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. We invite people of all cultural traditions to stop by with any concerns, questions or just to talk.
