McCain best choice among Republicans
By Editorial
We believe that every Republican candidate for president has major flaws on issues, flaws that make them unfit for the oval office. None of the Republican candidates are providing solutions to get the country out of Iraq or get the country out of its recession.
However, there is one candidate who is clearly the best choice among Republicans: John McCain.
While we have serious reservations about Senator McCain's ideas on Iraq and fixing the economy, he has shown a willingness to be a bipartisan player in Washington, D.C.
Unlike President Bush, McCain would not be a bitter, divisive president. McCain was involved with creating a bipartisan solution to the stalled federal judges controversy during Bush's first term. He helped offer a bipartisan solution to illegal immigration. While the legislation was ultimately unsuccessful, McCain's willingness to work with Democrats on tough issues shows he will take unsafe stances on issues he believes in.
McCain believes that global warming is real -- unlike some of his Republican opponents -- and unlike our current president, McCain would tackle our country's biggest environmental problems.
On the Iraq war, McCain has the wrong strategy. He believes we need to remain in Iraq because it is the central front in the war on terror. McCain has military credentials, but his plan to stay in Iraq indefinitely will not make our troops or the people of Iraq any safer.
Still, the other Republican candidates have equally dismal solutions for Iraq, and they aren't any better in other issues.
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will say anything to get a vote, including lying during the last Republican debate by saying he has been consistent in his views on abortion and gay marriage.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee might be a nice guy to have a beer with, but he isn't who we want running our country when he believes the Earth is 6,000 years old, wants to abolish the IRS and would amend the constitution to reflect his extremist social beliefs.
McCain has proven that he isn't afraid to take unpopular stances, and he would have the greatest chance of all the Republican candidates to turn the country around.
