MORE BRONCO BRIEFS
BASEBALL
UC Riverside 1, Santa Clara 0
It was a pitcher's duel on Saturday afternoon as the game remained scoreless through the first seven innings. Freshman Sean O'Neill was on the mound for the Broncos and struck out six to lower his ERA to 0.89 on the season. Riverside pitcher James Simmons struck out 10 Santa Clara batters and walked one on the day. Sophomore reliever Chris Stansbury gave up a single that went off the glove of sophomore Ryan Conan for the game's only run.
Santa Clara 3, UC Riverside 2
It took 13 long innings, but the Broncos were able to finish off Riverside late on Sunday afternoon, powered by a comeback home run from senior Dustin Realini in the bottom of the 13th with two outs. Following the home run and two singles, Conan drove in senior Eric Newton to cap off the victory. Freshman Justin Kuehn started for Santa Clara and battled with Riverside's Pat Cassa until the eighth inning when the score was tied at 1-1 apiece. Freshman Mark Willinsky stepped in and finished the game. What was supposed to be a Sunday doubleheader was cut short in the second game with Riverside ahead 4-1 because of a power outage in Schott Stadium forced the game's postponement. No makeup date has been announced.
Santa Clara 11, Sacramento St. 9
Santa Clara jumped out quickly to a 9-0 lead in the second and third innings Tuesday night at Schott Stadium. The Hornets did not go quietly, however, and came back to add four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman Brady Fuerst, who went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs, drove in junior Kyle Hartz while sophomore Gabriel Alcantar scored on a wild pitch in the 7th to give Santa Clara some insurance. In the top of the 8th, the Hornets scored five more runs in an attempt to catch the Broncos before sophomore reliever Jeff Lombard was able to strike out the last batter in the ninth to bring home the win.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
St. Mary's 6, Santa Clara 1
Santa Clara's lone point came from sophomore Myra Davoudi's victory at the fifth seed (6-4, 2-6, 6-4). The duo of junior Erika Barnes and freshman Stephanie Hermann also won their match 8-7, but it was not enough to earn the team a win.
San Francisco 4, Santa Clara 3
The Broncos won the doubles point and juniors Kelly Leathers and Casey Knutson both won their singles matches, but USF won four singles points and took the win last Monday afternoon.
