New members welcomed to student senate

Student Senate welcomed eight new members Thursday night, the same night they announced the temporary loss of another key Associated Student Government contributor.

Eight freshman students were sworn-in to their new positions for ASG by Chief Justice Justin Gilio. The newcomers included five new senators, two new class chairs who will take part in ASG's community development branch and a freshman class justice.

The five senators were elected by their class in the student election that ended last Tuesday while the remaining three ASG additions were appointed by ASG's executive board.

"We are extremely excited to have five new additions to senate," said ASG President Chris Mosier. "It means we can be that much more productive, to have additional members and to initiate new ideas. They have a unique perspective in that they really don't know as much about Santa Clara and can offer new creative ideas and that's something we're certainly excited about."

Each of the five senators will be assigned to a specific committee within senate by Senate Chair Robert Leupp. The appointments will be based on committee need as well as senator preference, as each of the five was asked to specify their desired committee appointment.

Decisions will be completed next Thursday.

After being sworn-in, the five new senators were asked to join the meeting and got their first taste of university government action.
