New Year Brings New Technology in Library

By Amy Bernstein, Associate Reporter

Stepping into the library this year will be like stepping into the year 3000.

The Harrington Learning Commons is renting out iPads, Kindles and Tablets to current students and faculty.

This new lending program is not the only new addition to the library this year. The library has also added a TV screen in the front of the library showing which study rooms are available.

This was a request from students on the Associated Student Government.

Also coming soon is a new interactive monitor with a map of the library. Students will be able to click on a room on the monitor and be directed to its location within the building. Students will also be able to click on a staff member's name and be directed to his or her office. This monitor is still underway and expected to be installed before the end of the quarter.

"The new lending program serves as a way for students to experiment with new technology and reading habits," said Assistant Librarian Elizabeth McKeigue. "It also allows faculty to learn how to improve teaching skills while using mobile devices."

iPads can be checked out for one week while Kindles and Nooks can be checked out for three weeks.
