No tanktops allowed in new fitness center

The new Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center comes with a new set of rules, which includes a no tank top policy.

Students will not be permitted to wear tank tops while working-out in the new fitness center.According to the Director of Media Relations Barry Holtzclaw, this rule is being enforced for sanitary health reasons and to prevent deterioration of the equipment.

"Any extra perspiration will cause the machines to deteriorate at a quicker pace," Director of Campus Recreation Mark Harriman said. "We want to do anything we can to prevent that deterioration."

The perspiration produced while working out gets onto the equipment and is transferred from student to student causing sanitary concerns. Students may choose to pay an initial $5 to use towels provided by the fitness center, but are still required to wear shirts.

Student responses to the rule have been less than agreeable.

"I think that it's unfair to put a restriction on what we can wear while we're working out," sophomore Joe Dekker said.

Regardless, the rule will stand.
