Norman Martin, S.J., a Santa Clara institution who inspired generations of students, faculty, and benefactors, has died. He was 91.
Fr. Martin died Sunday evening at O'Connor Hospital following a brief illness, University President Paul Locatelli, S.J., said in an e-mail this week.
A 1937 graduate of Santa Clara, Fr. Martin entered the Jesuit order more than 70 years ago. He joined the history department faculty in the late 1950s and later served in several administrative roles, including the development and president's offices.
"He was just so passionate about Santa Clara, especially about the students," said James C. Siwicki, S.J., director of Campus Ministry. "That gave him such great joy in life."
A mass celebrating Fr. Martin is this Saturday, Feb. 11, at 9:30 a.m. in the Mission Church. A reception will follow in the Williman Room, located in the Benson Memorial Center.
