When entering the bookstore, it's safe to say that many students don't peruse the various aisles of merchandise upstairs. Rather, they walk straight ahead and down the stairs to buy their textbooks. While waiting in line, one may glance carelessly at any of a number of books that the bookstore sells upstairs, but odds are that unless its required reading for a class, many students won't buy any of the books, even if they're remotely interested.
There's one book in particular though, that is worth more of a read than what your professors may put on your syllabi. Michael Moore, best known for his documentary "Bowling for Columbine," is also a gifted writer whose aim is to expose what he believes are the greatest faults of the American way of life. His latest book, "Dude, Where's My Country?" does just that.
Moore's book focuses on "Aiming his barbs at targets near (corporate corruption, the erosion of civil rights) and far (war in Iraq), Moore offers practical strategies for regime change in America." Regardless of your political affiliation, Moore's book is more concerned with exposure and the spreading of knowledge, rather than turning one away from one's political faith. One reviewer had this to say, "This book isn't about republicans versus democrats or right wing versus liberals. This book is about starting a revolution against arrogant political and corporate leaders who believe they have the world wrapped around their fingers." His book is currently number one on the Lost Angeles Times and Booksense.com lists, and currently on the top 10 lists of seven other nationally recognized lists.
Opinions about Moore tend to vary; some consider him to be a liar, while others dub him a political godsend. However, one can never say that he doesn't care about his country. As one reviewer put it, "Criticize Moore all you want - because, after all, you're just giving him free publicity - but in dissent, he takes a more positive role in democracy than you ever will." Moore's book is available in the bookstore for a cover price of $24.95.
