SCENE SPOTLIGHT

"My music is genre less. It's anything I like or that I'm feeling at the time, whether it's rock or hip hop or RandB or jazz or whatever." Whatever it is, Norm, we like! Many of you have probably seen, if not heard, Norm Malonzo around campus. If you're lucky, you've been privy to one of his great performances, whether at Love Jones or Global Village or any other performance venue around Santa Clara.

Malonzo, who has been an active part of Barkada and gospel choir, has a smooth voice that reminds its listener of a cross between Babyface and Usher. He interlaces hip-hop, RandB, jazz and whatever he feels fits his mood to create a unique blend of music that appeals to everyone. He tends to write about past relationships and specific things that he has experienced in his own life.

As far as his music career is concerned, Malonzo isn't looking to dive deep into the music industry right after college. He came to Santa Clara to get a degree and he's going to use it, but that doesn't mean that he's not looking into a possible career in music. "I've been meeting with a producer and spending some time in the studio and I'm looking to put out an album in a few months," Malonzo says. Malonzo said he is just looking to have fun with the music though, because it is something he enjoys.

Malonzo, a senior communications major graduating this year, says the best part about performing at Santa Clara is the message and the person who he promotes throughout his music. As a Bay Area native, Malonzo feels that a lot of people here at Santa Clara haven't really experienced diversity or seen it as he sees it. He feels that he can give Santa Clara students who haven't had particular experiences a look into his world and his experiences. Well, perform on Norm. We're all ears.
