SCENE SPOTLIGHT
As a transfer student, it took Brandon Douglass a few years to get involved at Santa Clara. Between living in a house with a great group of guys and really taking advantage of what Santa Clara has to offer through both academics and extracurricular activities, he's finally gotten comfortable with Santa Clara.
"My hobby is basically politics. It's what I watch, what I read about and what I do." Brandon Douglass most definitely lives the life of one concerned and interested about the political future of his country. One way in which he's satisfying his thirst for political awareness is through the newly founded College Democrats. College Democrats, founded by Jasper Seldon, aims to promote awareness without stressing partisanship. They want to get young people, especially those within our college age group, interested in voting and politics. "Our purpose is not to indoctrinate, but to educate. We aren't trying to convert people, just make them aware of the history and intricacies of politics. Santa Clara is a microcosm of the main political parties and people throughout our country. It provides a unique and diverse pool of people and political perspectives. A lot of people, both college students and high school students of voting age, are coming into their own as far as voting and politics are concerned. Most of them watch the news or see some mass media blurb and that is the foundation of their political knowledge base. College Democrats wants to work to dispel myths about politics and inform and educate those people who may not have a great understanding of politics and how it affects them."
Besides College Democrats, Douglass has become newly involved with the debate team, has dabbled in theatre, and participated in a number of events put on by the history department. His goal, post graduation, is to enroll in law school and then enter the political arena, working his way up from political lackey to big time candidate. In the meantime though, he spends his time hanging out at his house on Washington Street and playing online dominoes.
