Greg Geibel

? Accounting Major

? Class of '05

As the end of spring quarter nears, students are madly researching for term papers or mobilizing for finals. In addition to all this, sophomore accounting major Greg Geibel just kicked off his annual campaign for the 2003 American Heart Walk in September. Geibel endeavors to raise $20,000 for the American Heart Association and to encourage as many of his friends and family as he can to donate or participate in the walk. ìFor the past four years, I have gathered as many family and friends as possible and we walk under the team name of ÃGo Geibel,'î Geibel said.

Geibel's involvement with the heart walk began while he was in high school. After giving a speech to bay area company leaders about a heart condition which came to light after he survived a heart attack as an infant, Geibel realized the potential awareness he could raise as an advocate for the American Heart Association.

ìAt the age of three months old, I suffered a heart attack,î Geibel explained. ìI was pronounced dead, but thanks to my dad's CPR knowledge along with the research and medical advancements funded by the American Heart Association, I am alive and well today - I am forever thankful to the American Heart Association and its continued efforts to fight heart disease.î

Geibel's efforts in the past four years have amassed over $50,000 for the American Heart Association. His plan to raise $20,000 more revolves primarily around educating people about heart disease.

ìMost people don't realize that heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the nation, among men and women, young and old,î Geibel said.

ichael Drewniany

? Marketing Major

? Class of '04

This resourceful junior marketing major took his passion to the next level. By combining his love of martial arts with the practicality of business savvy, Drewniany was able to help open the Twin Dragon Kung Fu Academy. ìI co-own the school with my karate instructor and good friend, John. I've been training under him for 14 years,î explained Drewniany.

The academy, located in San Carlos offers a variety of styles by incorporating Aikido, Tae Kwon Do and boxing. However, one of the specialties of the Twin Dragon Kung Fu Academy is weapon training, encompassing 25 distinct weapons. Drewniany's years of training have equipped him with the skills necessary to teach others the ancient martial arts.

What began as a childhood hobby and mild obsession with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon has evolved into a fulfilling teaching career over the course of sixteen years.

ìI enjoy passing on the knowledge I have to others,î said Drewniany, who teaches both adults and young children. ìI especially love to teach kids and watch as they improve. One of the things I've come to realize is the amount of influence I have on these kids, I do whatever I can to make them not only good martial artists, but good people.î

Drewniany has what most people never find. ìIt is such a rewarding job ñ I wouldn't give this job up for anything.î

The difference that Drewniany makes is not all fun; he handles all the office duties which range from financing and accounting to marketing. Although he is a business major, Drewniany modestly attributes a lot of his business success to his friends and family who have helped him out in that arena.ìMy dad helped me out a lot because he used to own a business,î Drewniany said of his father who is an investor in his son's business.
