Clara ChuClass of '03Sociology Major

Senior Clara Chu has been a part of so many different groups, activities and leadership positions at Santa Clara over the past four years that it's difficult to list them all.

Chu has been a Community Facilitator in different residence halls on campus since she was a sophomore.

She is also a Building Manager in Benson Memorial Center and works in Undergraduate Admissions.

Rounding out her broad range of involvement and activities, Chu volunteers at Sacred Heart Nativity School in San Jose and is an at-large member of the MultiCultural Center Programming Board. Through her work with the latter, she is currently helping to organize Hoops for Hunger, an event that will take place on Nov. 16 as a part of the upcoming Hunger Week.

Chu hopes that these activities will provide her with a chance to see what it is that makes different people succeed. A first-generation college student, Chu realizes the importance of a college education. In turn, she plans to apply that knowledge and experience to her life's work, possibly as a teacher.

"I'd like to help underprivileged high school students to get into college," she says.

Michael HarveyClass of '05English Major

As a commuter student in high school, sophomore class president Mike Harvey didn't live close enough to be able to participate in many extra-curricular activities. While living on-campus at Santa Clara, however, he has been able to take advantage of a wide range of opportunities.

"Being so close, I chose to really get involved," said Harvey.

One of his first and easiest decisions was to join Associated Students.

"I always wanted to be involved in student government," he said.

Through AS, Harvey hoped to help plan social activities and to work to solve issues for fellow students. He took a step toward making that goal a reality when he was elected a class senator his freshman year.

He decided to take an even bigger step and to run for class president his sophomore year. He was elected last spring for the 2002-2003 school year, and so far, Harvey says, "It's been a blast."

Harvey is also active in a number of other ways around campus, as a member of the Current University Issues Committee, a peer tutor for English with the Drahmann Center and a member of Santa Clara's boxing club.
