SCU Women’s Soccer Shut Out 4-0 by No. 1 Stanford

Santa Clara women’s soccer (2-2-3) fell 4-0 to No. 1 Stanford University on Sunday, September 6, suffering its largest loss of the season. 

The Broncos fell behind early after Stanford’s Charlotte Kohler opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Jaden Thomas then added two goals, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead by the 27th minute.

Jacey Martinez ’27 recorded Santa Clara’s only shot on goal in the first half, while goalkeeper Ally Harrison ’29 made four saves. Harrison made three of those saves during the final six minutes of the half as Stanford continued to pressure the Broncos.

Santa Clara entered halftime trailing 3-0. Goalkeeper Maysen Veronda ’28 made her Broncos debut to start the second half. 

Stanford extended its lead in the 51st minute when Thomas scored her third goal of the game, completing a hat trick and making it 4-0. Thomas finished the game with three goals and an assist.

Despite the deficit, Santa Clara created more offensive opportunities in the second half, holding a 9-6 advantage in shots. Kennedy Schoennauer ’27 hit the top goalpost in the 69th minute, while Addie Whitehouse ’27 struck the left goalpost in the 86th minute.

The Broncos were unable to convert either opportunity into a goal. Schoennauer and Whitehouse led Santa Clara with four shots each. Veronda made one save in the second half. 

“We had more chances in the second half than did Stanford. Proud of the second half performance,” said Bronco women’s soccer head coach Jerry Smith. “If we can somehow figure out how to put 90 minutes together, like the first half of UCLA or the second half of Stanford, we can compete with anybody.” 

Santa Clara will hope to rebound when they host Fresno State on Sunday, September 13, at 1 p.m.
